I plan to include nine varieties of charentais- type melons in a replicated variety trial using the randomized complete block experimental design. I'd also like to screen an additional 9 specialty melons, 10 plants of each, using two additional beds, following same bed design. There would be 4 reps, 5 plants of each variety per rep. and field would be set up with 15" spacing down the row between plants with 6' break between each varietal plot and 10' between rows that would be drip irrigated with existing system. This would require use of full length of field or 111.5' long from north to south and 60' wide approximately. Soil would have to be finely cultivated to receive seed not transplants, but beds would not be necessary.

Master Gardeners would do the planting, thinning and hand weeding around the plants with the field station doing the weeding between rows and at the end of the fields mechanically or with suitable herbicide. Irrigation would be sprinkle for emergence with subsequent drip. The field station would turn it on and off as needed. Master Gardeners would harvest and record all data. One field day for growers, gardeners and nurseries would be held in late September or early October.
